Fairmont, WV – Alexis Baker Weekly, a June 2020 graduate of Shinnston High School in Shinnston, WV was awarded the first Sharon McCaugherty Memorial Foundation (SMMF) scholarship, valued at $20,000 over four years. Ms. Baker Weekly is planning to study biomedical engineering at West Virginia University.
Athena executives Dan McCaugherty and Dan Nawrocki along with Shae Strait, Sharon’s son, have served on the board for the Foundation since its inception a year ago with the objective to raise $20,000 per year of scholarship funds for young women pursuing a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) education. With $10,000 in donations from numerous contributors and $10,000 from Athena Sciences Corporation, this objective was met.

“We are excited to award the first scholarship to Ms. Baker-Weekly. The goal of the scholarship is to give intelligent and hard-working young women the help they need to succeed in a STEM field. We are excited to achieve this goal in awarding the scholarship to her,” according to Foundation Chairman Dan McCaugherty. “It is now time to raise $20,000 in our 2020 fundraising campaign. I encourage past donors and new donors to contribute to this worthy cause.”
